Knowing about health requires some knowledge about the body. While humans have the same basic anatomy and physiology, each of us has a unique makeup, health history, and health status. By first learning the basic facts about the human body, we can move toward understanding individual, intimate, and intricate details when it comes to health. The structural organization of the human body is comprised of several interrelated levels.
The essential nutrients include water, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals. We need all of these substances to maintain healthy functioning. Disease can develop without sufficient of balanced intake of any of these vital nutrients.
Molecules of protein are composed of amino acids linked together in a structural chain. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, needed to construct every cell in the body, from white and red blood cells to the cells in your skin, organs, and bones.
The way we view fats has undergone the most radical change of all when it comes to macronutrients. We have begun to understand the role of essential fatty acids and to distinguish between beneficial and unhealthy sources of fat.
Vitamins protect our health and facilitate numerous processes for an effective metabolism. The name “Vitamin” comes from the Latin word vita, meaning “life”. Individual vitamins were named with letters of the alphabet in the order of their discovery. Today, there are 13 well-known vitamins, four fat-soluble and nine water-soluble.
Calcium, chloride, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, and sulphur are major minerals that are required in amounts greater than 100 mg/day.
Other minerals are needed by the body but only in trace amounts: iron, zinc, copper, manganese, fluoride, chromium, molybdenum, selenium, and iodine. Trace minerals are required in amounts less than 100 mg/day in our diets.
Healing with plants — including herbs — is also known as phytotherapy (phyto is Greek for plant) or botanical medicine. It encompasses herbal healing traditions, homeopathy, and aromatherapy (essential oils). This module will focus exclusively on herbal medicine.
Understanding natural health in terms of how the body works, the value of whole foods, nutritional supplements, and other remedies will be a valuable commodity in any natural health-related endeavor. In addition, understanding the legal implications in applying your knowledge becomes as important as the knowledge itself.
